26 May Maintaining Momentum -The Virtual Ocean Dialogues
In the face of COVID-19 and the resulting cancellation of key ocean events, maintaining the momentum for ambitious and urgent global action for a healthy ocean is essential. To support this and to fill the gap in the calendar left by the postponement of the World Ocean Conference, the World Economic Forum and the Friends of Ocean Action are curating the Virtual Ocean Dialogues from 1-5 June 2020. Heads of State and Government, leaders from business, members of civil society and scientific communities will gather at the virtual summit to share innovations and solutions and to fast-track bold action for a resilient and thriving ocean.
“We need an all-hands-on-deck approach to achieve action for a healthy ocean, and with the Virtual Ocean Dialogues, we are creating the opportunity to involve more people than ever before. No matter where you live and work in the world you can participate in these Dialogues – all you need is an interest in the future of two-thirds of our planet,” said Kristian Teleki, Director of Friends of Ocean Action, World Economic Forum.
The dialogues will centre around three themes: Restoring Ocean Life, Building a Sustainable Blue Economy, and Beyond Ocean which explores the ocean’s role in feeding the world, improving human health and well being, providing jobs and livelihoods, and mitigating climate change.
A healthy ocean is essential for economic recovery, food security, jobs, and the battle against climate change. The Ocean Dialogues will bring to light ambitious and inspiring solutions as well as tangible opportunities for positive change.
